Stump Grinding & Removal

That stump isn't going to rot away on its own schedule. Grinding takes it below grade in an afternoon.

Stump grinder chipping a stump below ground level

Left alone, a stump can take a decade or more to break down — sprouting suckers, attracting termites and ants, and sitting exactly where you want lawn, pavers, or a new tree.

Stump grinding uses a machine with a carbide cutting wheel to chip the stump into mulch, typically 6 to 12 inches below grade. It's faster and far less disruptive than digging the root ball out, and for most landscaping purposes it's all you need.

Common requests

  • Grinding stumps left over from past removals
  • Multiple-stump cleanups on older properties
  • Surface roots that trip people or wreck mower blades
  • Preparing an area for sod, pavers, or a new planting
  • Stumps that keep sending up new shoots

Good to know

  • Standard grinding goes 6–12 inches below grade. If you plan to replant a tree in the same spot or pour concrete, ask for a deeper grind.
  • Grinding produces a surprising volume of wood-chip mulch. Decide whether you want it left to settle in the hole, used elsewhere on the property, or hauled away.
  • Call 811 (or ask the provider to) before grinding near buried utilities, irrigation lines, or landscape lighting wires.
  • Access matters: most grinders fit through a 36-inch gate, but confirm gate width in your request for backyard stumps.

Stump Grinding & Removal — frequently asked questions

How long does stump grinding take?

Most residential stumps take well under an hour of grinding time once the machine is on site. Multiple stumps are usually priced and scheduled together efficiently.

Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?

Yes, with preparation. Ask for a deeper grind, remove the excess wood chips, and backfill with soil. Planting slightly offset from the old stump location also helps the new tree establish.

Will grinding stop the stump from sprouting?

Grinding removes the stump itself, which stops most regrowth. A few vigorous species can still send up shoots from remaining roots for a while — these are manageable and taper off over time.

What happens to the wood chips?

Your choice: leave them mounded in the hole to settle, spread them as mulch, or have them hauled off and the hole backfilled with soil. Specify your preference in the estimate request.
